A new class of fungus has been discovered in Australia and is thought to be causing tooth decay.
Australian scientists have identified a new species of fungus that can cause tooth decay and said it is a threat to the health of people.
The fungus, which is found in the soil, has been found in more than 300,000 cases of tooth decay in Australia.
Professor Stephen Pye, from the University of New South Wales, said the fungus had been found by researchers in South Australia.
“This is a fungus that has a long history in Australia,” he told the ABC.
“There have been cases of this fungus being found in Australia for some time, but not quite as extensively as in South Africa, and it was only recently that we discovered it in the state of Victoria.”
Professor Pye said the new fungus had only recently been found.
“So we had to do a lot of work on it,” he said.
“It was only a matter of time before it was detected in the population, and that’s when we noticed the decline in the prevalence of this disease.”
Professor Anthony Vignoles from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) said the results of the study were promising.
“What we’ve shown is that the fungi can cause some pretty serious conditions, including some infections,” he explained.
“We think that’s because of their ability to break down proteins that are normally used in the human body.”
Professor Vignols said the fungi could also be harmful to the human microbiome.
“The fungus can break down essential proteins in the body, which could be harmful in some people,” he added.
“That’s why it’s important that we do lots of clinical trials to see if we can stop this happening.”
He said the study also showed the prevalence and extent of the fungus was changing.
“As people are living longer, they’re also consuming more and more foods and that is increasing the risk of developing tooth decay,” he noted.
Dr Fiona McCarron, from NICE, said that while there was no cure for the disease, there were ways people could reduce the risk.
“For example, it is possible to get rid of tooth enamel, and we know that dentists can remove these,” she said.
“There are also some foods that are better for the teeth, like whole grains and vegetables.”
Other food groups can also have a big effect on the health, and there are some foods you can really focus on.
